Central High School Welcomes Troop E to Campus

During school on Wednesday, January 27 CHS was visited by the Troop E State Troopers and Sheriff James Glen Kelly.  The Troopers and Sheriff Kelly spent time with each grade level, to discuss issues that pertain to their age group.  The students were thrilled with their visit, and would like to share some of what they learned.

"They showed us a presentation about drugs, suicide, and alcohol.  It's shocking knowing what drugs and alcohol can do to some people.  We also learned that we should all be nice, and try to help people if they have a problem.  The Troopers taught us to never put someone down for anything, and be the better person by going up to kids that are alone, and take time out to talk to them.  You never know what could happen to them or what's going through their mind."  - Cayleigh Cooper

"They said that if you do not wear a seat belt in the car, you could be killed." - Hunter Book, 4th Grade

"If your seat belt is not over your shoulder, it could break your ribs.  Also, if your feet don't touch the floor, you should be in a booster seat." - Richard Tiser, 4th Grade

"When you ride a bike, you need to wear a helmet.  Also, if you are under 10, and you must sit in the front seat, scoot the seat back as far as you can." - Brianna Colclasure, 4th Grade

"Wear your seat belt and helmets at all times." - Devin McGraw, 3rd Grade

"Kids need to sit in the backseat." - Vanessa Charrier, 4th Grade

"They inspired me to be a state Trooper." - Ashley Bordelon, 4th Grade

The faculty, staff, and students of CHS truly enjoyed having Troop E visit our campus.  Student Cayleigh Cooper had this to say about her experience on that day.  "It was very nice for the state Troopers to take time out of their busy lives just to come show our students what drugs, alcohol, and suicide can do to you, your family, and friends.  Everyone at Central High School would like to thank Troop E and Sheriff James Glen Kelly for coming and showing us that we all need to take the right path in life, and stay away from drugs.."

Get Healthy Cenla Program at CHS Kicks into High Gear 1/31/2010 - Tia Neal

The CHS Panthers have really been busy lately making sure that their campus is tobacco free.  Key students have been advocating the fact that students and adults should refrain from using tobacco products.  CHS has had two events lately that have showcased their commitment to the Get Healthy Cenla program.

Friday, January 22, 2010 was the night that CHS hosted their tobacco "Spit Out".  During the basketball game against Sicily Island, students and adults were encouraged to sign a pledge promising to be tobacco free.  After signing, they received a kit containing floss, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and information that can help tobacco users break their addiction.

During school on Thursday, January 28, 2010, Kourtney, Lacee, and Sunni gave a presentation to grades 4 and 5 called "Tar Wars".  During this presentation, students were informed about the harmful effects of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.  They were made aware of some of the chemicals added to these products, why the tobacco industries target the youth, how to "read between the lines" of tobacco advertising, and how to "just say no".

The Get Healthy Cenla program seems to making an impact on the students of CHS.  We are anticipating future events made possible by this program to keep students informed and aware, so that they are capable of making choices that lead to a healthy life style.
